PROPOSAL
'08 Proposal Guidelines
Time line for the Cell Biology Research Proposal, Spring 2008
(Tetrad Students only)
You will be assigned a faculty ‘advisor’, who is the first person you should contact to get feedback on your proposal. You are also welcome to contact other faculty whose field of research might be more directly relevant to your proposal.
Before May 14: Prepare a 1/2 page set of specific aims and deliver it to your advisor. Make an appointment to discuss the specific aims with your advisor this week, to ensure that you are generally on the right track. You may discuss your project ideas with other faculty at UCSF (or elsewhere) in addition to your formally assigned faculty advisor, but please indicate to Rachel whom you have consulted so that we can avoid assigning them as examiners.
May 19: Hand in your 5 page proposal to your advisor and arrange to meet with him/her during the same week. It is your responsibility to make the appointment!
May 27: You should have met with your advisor and gone over your 1st draft of the proposal by this date.
June 4: Proposals are due and should be handed in to Rachel (original + 2 copies), Genentech Hall Room 226. Please tell Rachel whom you have consulted in addition to your advisor.
June 9-13: Oral exam week. You will have two faculty examiners, neither of which is your advisor or someone you have consulted. You will receive information on the time/place of your exam 2-3 weeks in advance. The structure of the exam is quite simple: you will give a brief (<5 minute) overview of the proposal, after which you will participate in a pleasant 30-40-minute discussion of the proposal with your two examiners.
Here are three sample proposals from past years:
Proposal #1
Proposal #2
Proposal #3
